TFS and Visual Studio Project Folder Rename Operations

First off, I’ll give TFS the benefit of the doubt and admit that folder rename operations in a large project are probably not that common but in small environments renaming folders and re-organizing content during the first stage of the project are pretty common, at least for me. The downside to this is if your using TFS, things can get pretty nasty pretty quickly. My latest run-in with the reality show “TFS Attacks” cost me more frustration and wasted time undo’ing rename changes, unlocking files in TFS (using TFS SideKicks again) and kicking and screaming ;) The key to renaming and moving folders in a VS project under TFS control is check-in, rename or move, check-in, rename or move, check-in… Don’t try to perform multiple operations like create a folder, add a file, rename the folder and then try checking everything in unless you want to revisit the following dialog:

Apparently the folks in Microsoft’s Team Foundation Server group hold rename operations with a certain level of disdain or maybe its just the indecisiveness of renaming, isn’t your first attempt always perfect?
