Definition of Information Security

Every once in a while its valuable to revisit the fundamentals of a subject and my interest in information security is no different. Here is a simple and all encompassing definition of what information security is.

"Information security is the prevention of, and recovery from, unauthorized or undesirable destruction, modification, disclosure, or use of information and information resources, whether accidental or intentional. A more positive definition is the preservation of the availability, integrity, and confidentiality of the information and information resources." – Information Security Policies and Procedures A Practitioner's Reference, Second Edition, Thomas Peltier.
