Amazon Web Services announced support for versioning in their S3 file storage service. The native support in S3 now makes it a viable platform for backup and recovery solutions. I've been using S3 and Cloudfront for simple file backup and web site content distribution and am pretty excited to check out the versioning feature and start engineering a replacement for my current backup-to-disk solutions. What needs to come next for me? Edge content purge on demand in Cloudfront, waiting for edge content to expire on the current "up to 24 hours" schedule makes it a challenge to use Cloudfront with much less than highly durable files or non-critical changes (and the recommendation to manually version your files by adding prefix/suffix ids doesn't work out well for web site content). Other CDN services like EdgeCast offer edge purge now but their entry level costs are higher than S3's pay for what you use plan. Great job, keep it up AWS.
